This will not be another rant about Harold Camping and the only too predictable epic rapture fail. But the following thought crossed my mind yesterday: Who was left behind last time an actual "rapture" happened? Jesus' own followers (Acts 1:11)! And they were left for a reason!
Too easily we get transfixed by a focus on the end of the story when so much of it still needs to be written. What is wrong about wanting to escape this world, is first and foremost the lack of compassion and care it reveals regarding those whose lives are broken and have no hope of seeing a change for the better if all those who can witness to the source of healing are gone. The whole mindset that embraces a division of mankind between "the good guys and the bad guys" misses the point of love and grace for the enemies which is at the heart of the Gospel.
If the Son of God went to unimaginable lengths to express God's solidarity with humanity in our suffering, why would we want to be eager to escape just to end suffering for ourselves? Wouldn't this be the most selfish (and in a sense most UNGODLY) act ever?
