Social justice and the allocation of limited resources

I've been following Michael Kruse's series of posts on the topic of "Allocation of Limited Resources" for the last little while and find it very helpful in thinking through the actual complexities of both national and world economies and in considering the necessary balance between free market dynamics and necessary control and government intervention.

He's picked some good parables to illustrate that the approach to finding justice can't really work without a necessary distinction between what face-to-face communities can do and what system (no matter how flawed each system necessarily will remain) on the mass level of a market dealing with hundreds of millions of people is most effective and most beneficial in the end when it comes to looking after the needs of the individual and of society as a whole.
